iLasik: Freedom from Eyeglasses

I have been wearing eyeglasses since I was a teenager. It started as a trend in our high school where it was considered 'cool' to wear glasses. My vision then was about -75/75. It was not bad enough to warrant a pair but I still got one and wore it to school.

Eventually, my vision got worse. It is now about - 300/350. I find it hard wearing glasses lately because Baby Liam keeps grabbing them whenever I carry him. But, if I don't wear glasses I get dizzy. I have tried contacts but I find it too tedious to maintain. Now, I believe that LASIK technology is my best hope to being glasses-free.

Sis Pia had undergone LASIK procedure when she turned 21. It was fairly quick and painless according to her. First, anesthesia (in drops) was applied to her eyes. Next, the procedure itself took only 8 minutes. She was able to go home immediately after that. I remember that she had patches on her eyes when she got home that night. By next day, she could already see clearly without her glasses. I asked her if she would recommend the procedure to me and she said,

The price for the procedure has probably gone down by 50% since I had it. You should consider having LASIK done now.

The modern LASIK, known as the iLasik procedure, involves the use of 2 lasers instead of just one. Earlier versions of the procedure used a handheld blade to create a corneal flap. The iLasik procedure uses a laser making it more accurate and quicker. The second laser is used to correct the vision.

As I was reading about LASIK information on the internet, I found out that even the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA is now taking advantage of this elective procedure that civilians have been using for years. Their personnel with critical missions and those who go through demanding physical conditions have greatly benefitted from this procedure. They have called it safe and effective. According to Dr. Schallhorn (retired Navy captain and LASIK clinical researcher),

Technologically speaking, there is no better time than now to join the over 12 million Americans who have benefited from LASIK.

I am aware that LASIK, though a wonderful advancement in medicine, is not for everyone. There are certain factors to consider before being a viable candidate such as age and general health. That's why it is important to know more about the procedure and see a doctor to be sure. I really hope I qualify, though.

I also think wearing glasses cool! Not only can protect your eyes now glasses don't hurt, but also can prevent myopia.

Both LASIK and PRK represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and are thus viable alternatives to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.
