Davao City is in a celebratory mood this week because of the Kadawayan festival. Yesterday was the official start of the festivities and it was declared a special holiday by Mayor Duterte. Friday, August 22, is also a non-working holiday.
There are numerous activities throughout the week but my favorites are the Pamulak Kadayawan (Floral Float Parade) and the Indak-indak sa Kadalanan (Street Dancing Competition). The Indak-indak will be held on Saturday (23rd) while the Floral Parade on Sunday (24th).
I remember when I was able to join in the Floral Parade in 2000. Not just watch from the sidelines but actually walk beside one of the floats. It was so hot and humid that day. We walked the entire way. That was when Mom's organization Orchid Sociery of Davao joined the competition. Mom and her co-members asked the help of their daughters and sons in making the floral float. Since I was not doing anything else that time, I helped. Their entry was a very big metal globe and it had to be covered in orchids and flowers. I have never held and pierced so many flowers in my entire life!
We assembled in front of Ateneo de Davao at Roxas Ave. very early in the morning. And after an hour (or was it two?) of waiting, the parade finally started. It was not continues and we had to always stop and wait. This was when they combined the street dancing and float competition in one parade AND in one day. The judges were stationed in front of city hall and they had to watch every dance troupe and examine every floral float as they passed them by.
I promised myself never to join in a parade like that again. I think I was so badly sunburned after that. That's why in the succeeding years (and probably this Saturday and Sunday) I will just be watching the events on TV.
Mom is again selling plants and flowers this year at the Agro Fair. It is located behind SM City Davao. I went there last week but their exhibit was not finished yet. They officially opened the exhibit last Saturday (I think). We might pass by later today. I must remember to take lots of pictures to show you!
Til next time!

The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw", from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw", meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
